Perhaps the most famous among the
13 original states (that's commonwealth to you Brahmins),
Massachusetts is also one of the smallest in the U.S. Yet it is
still the seat of some of the richest (and oldest) history in
the nation. This is the home of Plymouth Colony, first settled
in 1620; its harbor in Boston is the site of the infamous Tea
Party; and today, it remains a hotbed of competing progressive
and puritan political interests that never fails to stir the
emotions of even the most hardened party hack.
The state's 375-plus years of expansion and growth have left
an indelible mark in the nation's psyche. The country's first
college, Harvard, was founded here in 1636; and our youngest,
and perhaps our most famous, president was born and raised along
the shores of Nantucket Sound. Henry David Thoreau penned his
immortal musings near rural Walden Pond, and today, some six
million people populate the state's 351 cities and towns. We've
paved the way with virtual highlights from some of the largest
