Hot spot for vacationing
students and retirees, Florida has been described as the
state of big hair, which may not be wholly unrelated to
its better known title, "the Sunshine State" (it gets
hot; you put up the hair, right?...er...). Big hair or
small, it's hard not to enjoy the weather here: Beach
connoisseurs will talk for hours of the variations that
exist between the Atlantic coastal areas, the Gulf of
Mexico, and the exotic features of the Keys. Who can
resist the desire to sink toes firmly into sand and
never leave?
But don't neglect central Florida. The Disney empire
continues to expand its influence here with the newly
created town of Celebration. Built on the edge of Disney
World, the city hopes to combine a pre-war small town
atmosphere with the advantages of modern technology.
It's a brave new world where cars are considered
impersonal and hidden from view, yet day-to-day
transactions can be handled through the community
computer network. So whether it's the subtropics of the
Everglades, the glamorous beaches and art-deco hotels of
Miami, or the cozier confines of Celebration, Florida
seems to have its bases covered. And if not? They can
probably manufacture something on the fly.
